Boredom is good. Maybe.

In a time when we have some of the most controversial leaders and some of the most controversial political election results in the world, it feels good to be in boring little NZ.

We have, looming, one of the most boring elections possible. Bill English, whose soporific tones make every soundbite seem to go on forever, matching up against Andrew Little, whose wit is about as quick as dutch elm disease.

This is good. No silly controversial tweets. No exploitive racial campaign slogans (well, Peters aside). No chance of any violence or politically charged attacks. This is good.

We hope.

The only risk from such a steady as she goes election is the media might get bored and look elsewhere for their headlines. Enter Kim Dotcom stage (far) left. He may end up getting way more airtime that he deserves (any). And this bugs me.

So, please, to any of you fine journos out there, by all means check out what he has to say. But please fact check. Then fact check again before printing any of his nonsense. Lets make NZ rise above fake news.

Labour won Wellington, but at what cost?

If what has happened recently to Labour in wellington is indicative of the wider party, I think they are in trouble.

Nick Leggott has had a brilliant career as a Labour politician. He was a successful mayor for Porirua (as a Labour candidate) and showed an enthusiasm and ability to engage the public. He was able to promote Porirua in a very positive light, while also taking on the harder subjects like the prevalence of meth. Talk to any local cop and they sing Nicks praises as a positive influence on the city.

Something must have gone wrong. I am guessing the new leadership of the Labour party did not get on with Nick and this resulted in them not supporting his Wellington mayoral bid. Instead they chose a very safe yet relatively unknown Justin Lester. Nick ran anyway.

Wellington chose Justin. this came down to Nick being painted as a right-leaning candidate, which helped split the vote with other right-leaning candidates. This was a pity, as Nick has always been true Labour. Throughout his career he has shown a true empathy and connection with Labour people. Porirua is a huge Labour leaning area.

Justin has already shown himself to be without spine. He was put to the test almost immediately due to a series of Earthquakes, then floods and slips, putting his city under huge strain. The city didn’t cope, and neither did he.

Instead of taking this opportunity to admit Wellington is not ready and that he will personally sort out its problems, Justin immediately towed the line by repeatedly saying there was no cause for concern, and that everything was fine. He was challenged by the brilliant Susie Ferguson on RNZ’s morning report and got tied up in knots.

And now, after rumours of Nick thinking of joining National (after his treatment, who would blame him?), Labours leader Andrew Little has been quoted on Newshub that Nick was never ‘true Labour’. What a terrible thing to say. Not only was he dismissing Nick, he was dismissing the huge amount of supporters Nick has had from his city.

In my opinion, this shows a Little’s inability to read voters. Don’t forget, he has never won an election. He was a Labour candidate on the list, losing his electorate race in New Plymouth. This must be a real worry for Labour.
